Life in Rome during Julius Caesar's time
During the reign of Gaius Julius Caesar, socially, Rome was put into classes. Mainly slaves, the poor, the lower-middle class, the soldier and the rich. The Rich only associated with the lower class people mainly for political and social favors and believed them to be better than the poor. The lower class, would usually stay together as well as there was a clear division between the two classes. Before and after Caesar reigned, not many people would walk streets of Rome unless it was an emergency or they were part of the trouble. Even, grown men and soldiers wouldn't go out at night due to the thugs and clans. Needless to say, the streets of Rome were dangerous at times. Relationship wise, for the most part everyone basically had relationships with whomever caught their fancy regardless of sex. Many rich would have slaves whom would please their masters/mistresses and their wife or husband rarely would care or see it as bad, more like fulfilling their needs. Lastly, all free men had were proud to be Romans! They were very loyal and patriotic about their Roman Empire.
Over all, the Roman economy was very wealthy during the Reign of Caesar. Caesar, before taking control would give the spoils of war back to the people, littering the streets with money and giving the people gold and silver trinkets, and saving some for Rome, which helped him during his reign. Caesar would raise war, against barbarians and neighboring non-Romans, take their wealth, gold and valuables, and let the survivors choose to be soldiers, prostitutes, or slaves (slaves were often bid on at markets). Slaves whom choose neither of the three were killed. So, its fair to say the economy was booming.
Politically, every slave wished to earn freedom, and every free man for the most part wished to climb up the social and wealth ladder. Later during Caesar's reign he became a little more liberal towards slaves and war, letting Gauls and barbarians become senators. He had peace and alliance with Egypt, marrying Cleopatra which gave Rome access to their resources, including grain. Though Caesar was an Emperor, there was still a Senate too. America has a senate somewhat that of what Rome had. This is why some laws used today still have Latin wording in the titles! They came from Caesar's time!
